Get Prepared

To make your attic declutter as efficient as possible, you need to prepare in advance. Buy everything you need before you start to help you stay focused and on task. This should include rubbish bags, different sized cardboard storage boxes, and permanent marker pens. You will also need to buy safety equipment such as gloves and knee pads, as well as a new ladder if needed. Depending on how much you intend to throw away, you may also need to hire a skip.

Choose a day where you have no other commitments to avoid getting distracted. You might also want to ask your friends and family if they can help you too. Just make sure you do this ahead of time and don’t leave it to the last minute.

Create Zones

Remove anything that obviously needs to be thrown away from your attic first. This will give you more space to move around and go through the items that need more consideration. Start putting the items you want to keep into zones where similar items are kept together. Try to do this, so the items you need more frequently are near the entrance to your attic. This will make it easier to locate what you need. Store the items you want to keep in your cardboard storage boxes, remembering to label them as you go! Also, consider if you could add anything to your attic to make it more functional such as clothing racks and shelves.

Look Out For Little Furry Friends

During your attic declutter, you may uncover signs of rat and mice nests in amongst your belongings. Attics are a popular place for these rodents to make their home as they are warm, dry and quiet. So keep an eye out of signs of an infestation as you sort through. This can include droppings, scratching noises and even dead rodents.

You should also look out for other issues such as mould and poor insulation, which may have been concealed before.
