5 Tips To Spruce Up Your Backyard For The Summer
Who doesn’t love the summer? Even bugs love this pleasantly warm season. Bugs shouldn’t worry you; however, since there are reliable companies like New Jersey mosquito control, for example, to take care of that.
Summer presents more opportunities for outdoor activities around the home. For this reason, you should try to create a hospitable environment in your backyard. Whether you’re holding a summer BBQ party, birthday bash, or any other summer activities, your family and friends need to have a great experience.
In that light, I’d like to present you five backyard landscape ideas to help you design your own garden and create a great outdoor living environment this summer.
1. Create a Garden Water Feature
Nothing can be more relaxing than the sight and sound of water in a warm weather. Consider adding a waterfall or a pond in your backyard. To add a more refreshing effect and make the place cooler, you can plant some trees around your water feature. Worried about space? An experienced pond builder can build a breath-taking garden water feature on the back patio of a townhouse. So, you don’t need to worry about having a limited space.
2. Irrigate the Pavement
During summer, the surface temperatures can be unbearable. You can install irrigation heads on the pavement surrounding your pool. As the sprinklers spray, they will lower the surface temperature of the pavement by up to 40 degrees when you’re getting out of the pool.
When it comes to patio surfaces and safe paths in your garden , it is advisable to go for the bright-colored pavement stones. Various temperature tests of patio surfaces have revealed that bright-colored surfaces can be 15-20 degrees cooler than dark-colored ones.
3. Create Shade
To deal with the scorching summer heat, consider adding some shaded areas. You can construct a freestanding roof gazebo. Build a pergola with wooden or concrete pillars, or maybe a permanent roof can work for you. If fact, there’s a vast variety of outdoor pergola designs to choose from.
If you’re on a limited budget, however, you can opt for canopies or shade sails. A small shade structure that features a stainless steel frame goes for as little as $10 per square foot. Their fabric normally comes with a 10-year warranty.
4. Plant Flowering Trees and Shrubs
To add more shade, consider planting some pretty flowering trees and shrubs. This will add a cooling effect to your house and backyard. The plants should be in areas with ample room to spread out.
In fact, before planting the trees you should consider its expected canopy width when it is fully grown. This will help you determine the space you need to leave. It is advisable to always water your trees properly in the first few weeks. Especially if you plant the trees in the spring.
5. Create a Living Room
If your patio is covered, it can be a great place for an outdoor living room. You can decorate it like the indoor living room:
• Get a sectional sofa and put other seats nearby to ensure there’s lots of seating space.
• Have lots of cushions – invest smart, buy furniture with sunshine-resistant fabrics!
Play around with art as you would do inside. Get some hanging artworks for the pillars, the walls, or even the fence. Buy some unusual flower pots and ornaments and mix things up.

Thanks for the suggestion to add a calming element to a backyard by adding a pond or waterfall. I grew up next to a creek, so the sound of running water definitely soothes me. My husband and I are wanting to remodel our backyard this summer, so we will have to talk about adding a small water feature! Hopefully we can find a great landscaping company who can work with us to create a mini-paradise in our yard!
I keep putting this off but I’d like to spruce up the tiny back yard…next spring for sure!
I love gardening, I’d rather do the garden than the kitchen.
Great ideas and summer is best enjoyed outside. As I sit here freezing looking out at the dreary day your post has helped me remember summer will roll around for us soon. Thanks.
Thanks, Debbie, 🙂 It is so weird to think that you are freezing and waiting for the summer, while we are having to cope with almost 40 degrees already, and the proper summer is yet to come. Thanks a lot for stopping by!
Wow! These are some awesome ideas. I love the creating your own shade. The picture you used there definitely got my wheels turning.

Aren’t those flower heads just gorgeous? I can’t believe that it’s winter for you, how weird is that, while we are dripping in the summer heat … and the best is yet to come … the hottest months are August and September here. Funny world 🙂 Thank you so much for coming over!!
