When Life Hands You Lemons, Make Mindfulness!
Life never runs smoothly. If anything, most of us experience it like a bucking bronco. The moment you think you have a grip, it chucks you onto that padded floor. But, this is the real deal, and you’ll only land on padding if you put it there yourself. In case you hadn’t guessed, we’re talking about how to remain mindful through ups and downs. Fail to tackle this, and your landing from that ride is sure to be painful. Get it right, and you’ll fall into piles of cotton candy.
We’ve all heard the saying ‘when life hands you lemons, make lemonade’. And, in all honesty, making anything from bad times is going to help. But, lemonade won’t save you. Mind over matter could! So, next time life hands you lemons… make mindfulness instead. Here are a few ways how.
The Art of Mindful Living
• Open Your Eyes – One of the primary teachings of mindfulness is to open your eyes to what’s around. Pay attention to things you haven’t seen before. And, you can apply this to most of the worries you face in the day-to-day. Often, by really opening our eyes to an issue, we can find a solution. It may be that your car has stopped running, but you can’t work out why. Open your eyes. Listen to the sound of your engine. Is it wrong? In what way?
Or, perhaps the issue is an emotional one. Does your partner seem unhappy? Pay attention to their actions, and note how you interact with each other. Is there something you’re doing, or not doing, which is upsetting them? As soon as you start paying attention in this way, you’ll be amazed at the revelations you come across. As well as helping you diagnose what’s going on, you may notice other issues brewing and waiting to come to the fore.
• Think Your Way Through – Once you’ve diagnosed the issue, you need to think your way to a solution. Mindfulness is all about opening your thoughts and listening to your intuition. So, do the same here. If your car needs extensive work, think about how you can get the money. It may be that you need to sell something on the side or turn to something like peer to peer lending to see you through. Either way, think hard about which would work best for you. If a solution leaves you uncomfortable, consider another until you settle on one which fits.
• Pay Attention to Your Emotions – Let’s not forget that one of the leading benefits of mindfulness is the ability to control our emotions. And, that’s something you should fall back on here. If you react to this incident with anger, you’re only going to hurt yourself. You’ll also make it more tricky to find a logical solution. Instead, meet this emotion with a few anger management methods. Pay attention to your feelings throughout this process. Meet each with acceptance and control. Don’t get carried away, but always bring yourself back to a place of logic and calm. Living mindfully means living peacefully – the art of mindful living.
