I. Before You Move
Start packing as early as possible. You might think that you’ve got plenty of time, and honestly, you probably do. But you’ll lift even more stress off your shoulders if you start packing a little earlier than you think is necessary. Early preparation is the best way to ensure that you won’t get too worried or stressed out in the long run. It’s important to make sure that you keep your stress levels down as much as possible – if you’re lying awake at night worrying, then you won’t have any energy the next day to make sure your move goes well.
Make an essentials box. You’ll need it for the first night that you move in so you don’t have to scrabble through eight different types boxes in search of your toothbrush. Your essentials box should contain essentially what you’re going to need overnight – sheets, towels, a clean change of clothes, and toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrush, washcloth, soap, shower gel, shampoo, and any sanitary products you might need. You should also include food like cookies to give you energy, along with bottled water, plates, cups, cutlery, trash bags, toilet paper, kitchen towels, and cleaning products.
II. While You Move
Find professional movers nearby. No matter how good you are at moving, chances are the professionals will be even better. You won’t have to worry so much about your favourite possessions getting broken if you put movers in charge of keeping all your things safe and secure. Look online for movers in your area, and check out reviews to make sure that they’re skilled and that other people have had good experiences with them.
It’s all about organized approaching. Make sure that each box is placed in the correct room so it’s easy for you to unpack and so you don’t have to lug heavy boxes from room to room when the movers have left. Try to pack heavy items such as books in suitcases with wheels so they can be dragged around instead of carried. It would be very easy to injure yourself while moving so you need to watch out for your back and keep yourself safe.
III. After You Move
Take your time and don’t make any big decisions too quickly. After you’ve unpacked the essentials, you have time to decide what exactly you want to do with the rest of the house. You don’t know how exactly you’ll want to organize it yet, so there’s no point in deciding on a huge expensive renovation that you might not actually need in the end.
Prioritise rooms. You don’t need to worry too much about your dining room just yet – instead focus on the rooms that all your family needs to move. You won’t get anything done without a good night’s sleep, so get all your bed set up as quickly as possible. Likewise, you need to be able to shower, so you need to ensure that the bathroom is sorted out. The kitchen is maybe a little less urgent – take this opportunity to explore all your local delivery restaurants.
