The 5 Best Places to Visit this Year
If you’re an avid traveller, chances are you’re looking at your next getaway. But where next? If you’re in need of some travel advice, these five destinations are the ones to visit in 2018.
1. Bogotá, Colombia
Despite being laden with crime in past years and gaining a less than desirable reputation as a result, as echoed by the Secret Traveller, Colombia has risen from the metaphorical ashes to become one of the most exciting, vibrant countries to visit. Situated at the very northern tip of South America, Colombia is renowned for its lush rainforests, alluring cities and the towering Andes mountains.
If you’re looking for Colombia’s biggest and best offering, be sure to visit Bogotá. The capital city boasts some of the best music, nightlife and culturally relevant spots in the entirety of Latin America. Despite often being overlooked by visitors to the country, it proves time and time again why it deserves your attention. For an energetic and spirited getaway, Bogotá could be that haven you never even considered.
2. New Orleans, USA
It’s the city’s 300th anniversary this year, so there’s no better time to visit New Orleans than in 2018. The Tricentennial events are happening throughout the year, with highlights being the Tall Ships ceremony as well as this month’s Mardi Gras which, despite being a raucous, spirited celebration each and every year, managed to do it bigger and better than ever before.
Elsewhere, be sure to visit the French Quarter, often said to be the heart and soul of the city, as well as Bourbon Street where you can lose yourself in the loud bars and clubs that line the road. One of the best things New Orleans does is combine its profound cultural heritage with a damn good time.
3. The Bahamas
It may have already slipped your mind, but the Caribbean suffered a devastating onslaught of severe hurricanes in 2017 – and tourism will help the region recover. Start by visiting the Bahamas. The archipelago which got off lightly and remains a tropical haven, with bright turquoise waters, sandy islands and luxurious retreats waiting to be discovered.
2018 looks set to be one of the Bahamas’ biggest years ever. With new resorts and hotels opening that’ll provide a luxurious getaway unlike any other. Nassau is where you’ll find some of the biggest, including the Rosewood Baha Mar, a complex complete with villas and a private beach. If you want a luxury getaway without disturbance, this is the perfect escape.
4. Crema, Italy
There’s no doubt you’ve heard of Call Me by Your Name, the novel-turned-film that has been receiving endless praise since its late-2017 premiere. And, as a result, many are choosing to flock to its setting. Crema, a small Italian town not far from Lake Garda. It has oft escaped the waves of tourism that sometimes overwhelm Garda and its surrounding towns and cities, but Crema has been suddenly placed in the spotlight as of the last few months. Don’t fret, though. It’s showing no signs of change or defeat in the eye of travellers booking trips to the town this year.
Instead, it remains a culturally rich and quintessentially Italian destination. Cobbled streets, traditional architecture and sun-kissed landscapes will leave you breathless.
Your friends and family will likely be in disbelief at how perfect a setting Crema looks in the pictures, but this dreamy escape really does exist – and now’s the perfect time to discover it.
5. Malta
Receiving the title of the European Capital of Culture in 2018 means Malta has well and truly been put on the map. And, if you haven’t yet discovered its wondrous qualities and offerings, now’s the time! The archipelago boasts a rather unique culture, a blend of Italian, British and African that has resulted in a beautifully different part of the world.
Valletta, Malta’s capital, is one such example of the country’s sheer beauty. The tan buildings that stretch across the city are almost unbelievable in their appearance, a statement of Malta’s finesse in almost every way.
